Twenty minutes later, Isla has left my apartment and I’m standing by the only window in my place that looks out onto the street, flipping through a mental rolodex as I wait. I’ve spent the last two weeks memorizing the faces, names, and job titles of everyone who will be at the gala, as well as their spouses’ names, kids’ names, and any other relevant info that I might be asked to supply.

Even with as good of a memory as I have, it was a challenge. There were a lot of names to learn, and after a while of staring at a list like that, it all kind of started blending in together.

But I’ve got this.

I do.

A black limo pulls up outside my building and my chest squeezes tight at the sight of it. I step into my heels, grab the little black bag I’m bringing with me, and head downstairs. I’ve just walked out of my apartment building when I see the driver walk around to open the back door of the limo, and…

…well, Isla was right.

Brett Kane is incredibly sexy in a tux.

“Jesus,” he says, rubbing a hand over his jaw as he takes me in. He’s gotten out of the limo and still seems to tower over me even though I’m in heels. “You look…incredible.”

“Thank you,” I say, barely managing to speak around the lump in my throat. “You look really nice, too.”

His eyes meet mine, and it seems like he’s about to say something else, but then he just shakes his head a little and says, “Okay. Let’s get going.”

I duck into the limo and take a seat. He gets in after and sits next to me. A few seconds later we’re gliding away from the curb and I’m putting every ounce of concentration into not looking over at the ridiculously handsome man sitting beside me.

“Are you prepared?” he asks.

Prepared?

Oh, right. The names.

“I am.”

“Good.”

Several seconds pass without either of us saying anything.

Think of something to say to him, Alicia. Something! Anything!

“So who do you normally bring to these kinds of things?” I ask.

Another second of silence passes. I glance over, wondering if he didn’t hear me. When I look at him, he’s leaning back in his seat, and he’s looking at me.

“I don’t usually bring anyone,” he says.

“Oh.” I fidget with the strap on my bag. “Not even if you’re dating someone?”

Oh, God. Why am I bringing up the subject of dating?

“Haven’t dated anyone in a long time,” he says.

I’m surprised to hear him say that. Surprised enough to press further. “How long is a long time?”

“I don’t know. Years.”

My surprise must show on my face, because his own expression softens and he lets out a laugh.

“You could look a little less shocked, Alicia.”

“Sorry.” My cheeks heat in embarrassment. “I just didn’t expect you to say that. I figured you were more of a…uh…”

“Playboy?”

I give him a sheepish smile. “Maybe.”

“Well, I’m not.”

“Gotcha.” A stupid amount of relief rushes through my chest. Just in case that shows
